Health            PE110

This course is aimed at adopting a healthy lifestyle for life.  Students will study a variety of topics: Health for Living, the Human Body, Drugs and Health, and First Aid and Sports Injuries.  Students will learn about health through discussions, research, and practical experiences.

Beginning Conditioning       PE220
  •  Credit: One semester 1.0 credit

  •  Prerequisite: None

  •  Grades: 9-12

Students will alternate lifting weights and cardiovascular fitness. Weightlifting will focus on increasing  muscular strength and endurance using free and machine weights.  Students will learn proper safety, technique, and spotting for lifting.  Fitness will focus on cardiovascular endurance through a variety of activities such as: cross country, biking, aerobics, jump rope, bi/triathlon, and swimming.  Students will learn to keep a log of their progress and achievements in both weights and cardiovascular fitness.
Advanced Conditioning
  •  Credit: One semester 1.0 credit

  •  Prerequisite: Beginning Conditioning

  •  Grades: 10-12

 

Advanced conditioning is designed to develop muscular strength and power.  This course teaches the students advanced lifting techniques as well as Olympic lifts. They will learn the buddy system while partnering with a fellow student.
Sports Leadership I -Teaching
  •  Credit: 2 Semesters/Full year 1.0  Credit

  •  Prerequisite: Teacher Approval, previous PE course

  •  Grades: 9-12

 

This course will introduce students to the concepts of teaching PE. This includes, - Planning, preparing and assisting a simple sporting activity and PE lesson

- Basic communication skills for leading a sporting activity and PE lesson
- Principles / practice in delivering a basic health / fitness session
- Understanding fair play in sport
- Understanding the role of the sports official
- Understanding the scope of local sport and the impact of sports ministry
- Demonstration of leadership skills in sport
The course is heavily practically based. Students will be required to teach elementary PE and to help out with the athletic program.

 

Sports Leadership II-Coaching
  •  Credit: 2 Semesters/Full year 1.0  Credit

  •  Prerequisite: Sports Leadership I (exception by instructor approval)

  •  Grades: 10-12

This course trains students with specific sports coaching skills and then applies them to help run the Elementary athletic program. All students are expected to give up their time after school to help run the elementary sports program, outreach events and at other times when required.  Students will learn:

  • Principles of coaching as opposed to teaching
  • The skills and understanding to lead younger students
  • Understanding the roles of officials and judges in sport
  • How to organize a tournament/event
  • Deliver safe, organized and effective sessions

Specific Coaching Skills could include:

Athletics/Track and Field -Judging and Assistant Technical Official Leaders Award

Badminton -Young Leaders Award

Soccer/Football -Junior Football Organizer

Rugby -Community Leaders Award

Swimming -Helper Certificate

Volleyball -Community Leaders Award

Basketball -Assistant Coach, Referee and Table Officials

There will be no specific teaching of younger students during the course of the week, but all students are expected to give up their time after school to help run the elementary sports program, outreach events and at other times when required.
