Beloved Northern Thai Speaking American has Served in Chiang Mai for 20 Years!

Amy Blair with 5th grade students

Twenty years ministering in a foreign country is a huge accomplishment. Amy Blair came to Thailand to serve at GIS twenty years ago when God clearly took her off the path of teaching literacy in the jungles and told her to teach missionary kids and support those serving in the “jungles.” While doing linguistics training, she talked with a couple in her mission who had been to GIS. They gave her a video and contact information. After emailing the elementary principal, she knew this was where God wanted her to serve.

Amy says that the reason why she stayed in Thailand so long was because of the people—her Thai friends, co-workers at Grace, and her students. “Relationships with Thais have kept me grounded; my co-workers give me life and joy; my past and present students are my delight every day.”

Here are what some of our staff have to say about Amy:

“Congratulations to Miss Blair on reaching this impressive milestone; 20 years at GIS. Miss Blair has faithfully obeyed God’s call on her life to love and serve the students, their families, and the wider GIS community for 20 incredible years. Visiting her classroom is always a joy. She has such a unique sense of humor and she makes her students laugh with her creative examples. The one unique thing about Miss Blair is that she has been a classroom teacher the whole time. Others of us have been here for many years but, unlike Miss Blair, we’ve had different roles. I think that’s an amazing accomplishment.” – Carole Steedman, Elementary Principal

“I met Kruu Amy 20 years ago. She loves going to the local markets and all the local vendors know her as the American lady who can speak Northern Thai. Amy has joined my family for meals and learned Northern Thai with them. She has planted and harvested rice with the farmers who all love and adore her. She’s a person who loves helping others and laughs a lot. I saw Kruu Amy cry once and it was when I was baptized. She said that she has prayed for me for over ten years and was so happy to call me a brother in Christ.” – Tui, Head Security Guard
